Happy Anniversary--to me!

downloaded from
As usual I got so wrapped up in other things that I forgot to blog something hugely important to me. Sunday, February, 12, 2012, marked five years since my first article was published. My first article was published by the University of South Florida Oracle. The first article I wrote was supposed to be a guide to inexpensive date ideas and since it was right around the time of Valentine's Day the editor reworded it slightly to be a guide to cheap Valentine's Day date ideas.

For me, its hard to believe its already been five years since I was first published. I've learned a lot in this five years and have been amazed how in this short time I've watched media change so much. In this five years I've watched twitter blossom into an unknown site to a popular way to share ideas, influence articles and even break news. From twitter- On March 21, 2006, Jack Dorsey (@jack) sent the first Tweet. I've also seen magazines I thought had staying power close their doors, websites pop up and then never get touched again, I've created my own sites that I let take a back seat, I've seen anchors retire, radio companies and newspapers layoff massive amounts of employees, magazines and newspapers creating editions for Ipads and kindles and other ereaders and so much more.

Since beginning my life as a writer and photographer I've hit personal milestones like celebrating five years of marriage to my husband Jeremy, graduating from college and getting the job as the Guide for the New York Times Company

Lately and running the My First Time Column for the tbt* have basically been my two main gigs. I did have a third in working for but, as most of you know, at the end of December 2011 the company changed its platform from a freelance generated content page to a generic Tampa search engine.

I suspect that we will see more magazines and newspapers make the shift to editions and less and less printed papers and magazines...even in the face of change...I have a lot of hope for my future in my career as a freelancer.

I hope to be writing a post like this in 25 years talking about things I've seen in my career. I am still a rookie openly saying I want to be in the game long enough to become a seasoned journalist. I'd like to see myself enrolling in school again and getting a master's degree and PhD to teach the new media (whatever form it will take). I would also like to blog more, write more articles (with a heavy focus on national publications), do some stuff with youtube and maybe write a book or two.

For the fifth anniversary traditional gifts are wood but modern gifts are silverware according to No, I don't need either but I was curious, so in true journalist form-I looked up the answer to my question, "What does a person get someone for their fifth anniversary?"

Where did January go?

Wow! I can't believe I haven't posted to this site since January 17, 2012!! It's been kind of a hectic start to the year but I think I'm finally developing a routine I can stick with and I can begin adding blogging back to my schedule which makes me so happy because I love having this as a creative outlet to say what I'm up to, what I've been doing/ will be doing and all that jazz.

Right now I'm sitting in an internet cafe on Dale Mabry and hunting online for old articles I've written as I continue to catalog all of them in a digital portfolio. Most of my January was consumed by editing the Working Women of Tampa Bay 2012 directory while meeting my article quota for my site on, writing for the tbt* and beginning a new project of ghost writing an article/blog post for a business in the area.

I would love to do a lot more ghostwriting for folks in the future! I plan on contacting folks and seeing what their needs would be for one and offering my services because I want to help businesses build credibility, help their clients with educational posts and help them get found online by potential new customers.

I'm looking forward to many more projects and am so grateful for every gig I get! I hope to post more cool stuff here and have every article I've ever written get a spotlight on here somewhere.

P.S. I'm cracking up right now because the first N'Sync single Tearin' Up My Heart just began blasting in this cafe and I still know all the words and have a sudden urge to dance a little. haha!
